My Newest Fixation.
Who Get’s Remembered? A NYC GALLERY STUDY.
First of all, welcome to the commencement of my new project, Who Gets Remembered? My plan for this project is a calculated research study of a number of galleries in Chelsea, NYC. Here’s the plan. I am going to research and then visit each gallery on my list. I am then going to write an individual post on each gallery following a consistent criteria. Finally I will compile my findings into a report.
Questions?
Don’t worry, I will explain. Firstly, what are the criteria I am examining these galleries with? There are four crucial questions I will be asking to organize my takeaways.
- Are established artists more likely to receive solo exhibitions at this specific gallery?
- Does artist tenure correlate with solo exhibitions?
- How many times has the current artist appeared during the last decade?
- Does this gallery preserve history, or just sell contemporary artwork?
After going through this list I will synthesize the galleries “mission” or “goal” in relation to my project into one overarching question.

What are these galleries and why did I choose them??
Well, I wanted a range of institutions from established mega galleries to locally emerging spots. I felt like Chelsea was the perfect place to base this project in. I will list the galleries involved below.

And Lastly,
Why?
I want to dig deeper into the art world and this felt like a good jumping off point. I want to step back and look across my research. I want to ask questions to test my actual data like does roster tenure correlate with anything, do the mega galleries and the smaller ones differ in how quickly they drop artists, does the gap between “represented” and “currently on view” tell me something about who’s being pushed forward versus who’s being maintained.
